Tin, sticks, & warped plywood make up this little school in the countryside of Haiti. When we met Mr. Wilson, the school principal, he was on the verge of closing “the doors” on the school. It was evident his heart is for his community, for the children, for education. He has allowed students to attend school without the required uniforms, without the right supplies, even without paying the normal tuition price-allowing families to simply pay what they could. Our partnership with Mr. Wilson started by getting the students to attend our annual summer camp. We began praying about what else we could do to help this community & school.
Fast forward to 2018, VOH partnered with the school and provided 10 children with education sponsorships. This partnership made education a reality for 10 children, and also helped supplement teacher salary. In 2019 the sponsorship program grew to 21 children. For $250 a year, a student has all the materials they need, a new uniform and tuition paid. In 2019, we also held our first professional development for the teachers- which was such a huge success!
All of these things were just the start of something only God can orchestrate. Our staff would lay awake at night listening to the sounds of Haiti, talking about the “God-size dream” to one day help Mr. Wilson build a new school with walls, doors, & brightly colored paint. We knew nothing about how to make that happen, but we were determined.
It is now May 2020…in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic…and we are receiving pictures of Phase I of a new school building for a community we love so much! We are in awe of the way the Lord works and the way He provides. We cannot wait to see our favorite little faces running through the doors of this new building.
